Collaborative Research Center 531

Design and Management of Complex Technical Processes and Systems by Means of Computational Intelligence Methods

logo.gif - 3.50 KB

The field of Computational Intelligence (CI) covers all sorts of techniques for subsymbolic (numerical) knowledge processing, such as the well known Fuzzy Logic (FL), Neural Networks (NN), and Evolutionary Algorithms (EA) as well as other approaches with lesser dissemination. Although CI techniques have been widely used in the last decade, there still existed a large gap between theory and application. To close this gap the Collaborative Research Center (SFB) 531 has been founded at the Technische Universität Dortmund in 1997 as an interdisciplinary research institute. It was financially supported by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG). The scientific goals of the SFB were the investigation and improvement of the foundations, applications, as well as combinations of CI methods. The Collaborative Research Center 531 ended in 2008 after 12 years of intense research.

A book presenting the achievements that have been obtained by the SFB during the years 1997 - 2002 is available at the Springer-Verlag. You can find a presentation of this book here.
